Could these ‘talking points’ of insurance & bond salesmen and misguided members of the press actually be paralyzing our future and our view of markets? Examine the facts and great information The Financial Coach shares from William J. Bernstein’s book ‘The Investor’s Manifesto.’

The Financial Coach, Bryan Binkholder is consistently amazed at the scary fact that hardly anyone knows or understands all the conflicts of interest in the financial field and the crazy fees. So many people have an utter lack of knowledge about what their investments really are costing that it puzzles him.

Ask yourself this question:
When you get gas for your car you know the price. When you buy milk or potato chips you know the price. When you see the doctor, you get a bill and know the price. Upon completing and filing your taxes your CPA provides you with a bill. If your car breaks down or you have an oil change, you know the price. If you join a gym, you know the price. When was the last time your Financial Advisor/Salesperson produced a bill or breakdown of their total fees to you?

Fact is, most investors have never understood how powerful this conflict can be to their wealth. Protect yourself and demand to know the truth–It will set you free! The Financial Coach has provided a simple to use ‘FULL DISCLOSURE’ and transparency fee chart to present to your advisor. Ask them to complete this in full and request that their supervisor also sign off on the document since in dealing with any firm you always want the chief people having the same level of committment as your investments and money. In doing so, three things will happen: 1) They will gladly provide it and believe that you have a full right to know since it is your money, 2) Give you rationale why they “can’t” complete the form or 3) Try to ‘explain to you’ their fees but not document them since verbal communication is always a he said/she said thing and subject to miscommunication (protect their butt!)

The last week has been a frightening reminder of 2008 and early 2009 when the market crashed. Investors have all kinds of reasons to ‘fear’ and the press and pundits only add to it. What will happen no one knows but we need to have a better understanding of human behavior and markets to guide our decisions instead of allowing financial salespeople the opportunity to sell us products based on our fear (or greed in good times).

As with anything going on there are always two sides to every story. When it comes to investing that is especially true. So many people are afraid of Inflation but there is still a strong case for potentially Deflation (things becoming worth less money). In order to protect against either situation that occurs, you must build and structure your portfolio to account for either move.

Watch the video to see Bryan and Jim Winkelmann battle it out.

Many investors are being drawn into long term corporate bonds while not fully understanding the risks associated with this type of investment. As you will learn, the general idea of fixed income investments are for security and stability in your portfolio. While a bond seems to be more secure than stocks, the truth is in tough economic times like we’ve seen, many corporate bonds have lost significant value. Truth be told–The worse still lies ahead with future rising interest rates.

Most investors are their worst enemies when it comes to investing along with the corrupt marketing system of selling investments that we call Wall Street & brokerage firms (and their minions: Financial Salespeople). Not understanding our risks in an investment strategy, falling prey to clever marketing and ‘Past Performance’ along with emotions that sidetrack us spell one thing and one thing only: loss and emotional pain.

Before you invest, DO NOT fall prey to investment ‘hype’ such as past performance or a fund managers ‘skill’. Instead, first know what you want to achieve and then use investment strategies and a policy statement that guides your investing in good times and bad. Keep costs low, rebalance and stay focused to achieve success.
